Little Teachers

On May 11th,  when the 4th graders came down to help the 3rd graders with division.

I broke the kids into groups and assigned two fourth graders to each group. The third graders were given 9 long division problems. They worked on their own in their notebooks and asked their fourth graders for help when they needed it. The fourth graders were given a small white board and a marker so they could show the kids the long division steps.

My kids loved it! It was a lot of fun and a big help to those who were not feeling confident about long division. The third graders took full advantage of the fourth grader's attention, asking them all kinds of division questions. The fourth graders did a wonderful job of asking leading questions to get the third graders where they needed to go. Both the third and fourth graders enjoyed the activity.

As a teacher, I felt that my kids who were struggling were more excited to try with the help of the bigger kids. The bigger kids also seemed to enjoy being the teacher.
