2016 LENT &

CAMPANHA DA FRATERNIDADE

One Home, Our Responsibility

Casa Comum, Nossa Responsabilidade

Lent is the spiritual “journey” that prepares us for the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. For this reason, we need to be willing to take the challenge through 40 days of intense prayer, fasting and almsgiving (charity). The Lenten season which starts on Ash Wednesday and goes all the way to Palm Sunday, brings us (the Church) the sense that it is possible to resist the temptations of the world and concentrate solely in the steps of the life of Christ. The temptations of selfishness, power and greed are always lurking, but with Christ, we can overcome them and be a new person in Him.

The Lenten season brings us the “Campanha da Fraternidade” to serve as a helper in our process of living out the true spirit of solidarity, respect and renewal. This year, the Campanha da Fraternidade will help us reflect and take action to protect our planet, our home, in order to take millions of brothers and sisters from the miserable situation they are in. Despite the

improvements and discoveries, it is a shame that in certain areas, people live without basic sanitation, clean drinkable water and the minimum sources to survive: We need to take good care of our planet!

Our model of society is based on consumerism and appearances. As we supply these necessities, we sacrifice the ONE house that belongs to all of us.   Caring for our home is a commitment that should not be taken by the Catholic Church alone, but by all people of good will.
