A morning in AquaRio

Sixth grade students spent the morning in AquaRio and had an enjoyable time listening to guides talking about the diversity of sea animals. They were very impressed by the facts and myths regarding sharks and their attacks. Other than observing the variety of fish species, crustaceans and corals in their huge aquariums, students were also able to touch animals, such as sting rays and crabs, in a special tank- an experience only offered to school groups. These are some of our students comments:

"I learned that sharks do not mean to kill us, they attack because they mistake us for their natural prey" - Ana Beatriz Maya

"There are sea turtles that can be larger than humans!" - Vitória Penteado

"Sea horses can swim sideways and even camouflage very well!" - Rafaela Ciampolini

"Clown fish have a mucus that makes them immune to the anemone's sting" - Marcelo Gea

"Corals are animals, not plants!" - Thales Oliveira

"Sting rays are very soft and slimy!" - Lucas Longo

"Fish swim in schools (=groups)! - Isadora Sertã

"Sharks do not like human flesh. They only kill about 3 to 5 people each year. Rollercoasters kill more than sharks yearly!" - Antônio Pedro

"We are the worst predators, not sharks!" - Thiago Peralta

"From all 500 shark species, only three are likely to attack people!" - Gabriela Martins

"Sharks should be afraid of us, we kill more than 100 million individuals a year!"

- Gabriel Correia
