Reaching the extreme ……

WE are the class of 2014 !

Traditions aren’t meant to be broken and that is why they are called traditions. Yet, traditions are made to the masses, to the majority, who I am not referring to here. I am part of one of the greatest classes that has ever stepped up to this stage. We are an exception to the rule.

To the rule that OLM students cannot get into Ivy League universities or that they can’t fundraise money to have their names in the Lancers uniform.

To the rule that we don’t have a chance in winning competitions such as the Knowledge Bowl or winning Platinum awards in community service.

We are all highlights. And in such a group, it is hard to have the spotlight for yourself.

In a group of powerful minds, it is impressive to take the lead. Within athletes in terms of heart and mind, it is dazzling one can run an extra mile.

Now, having a person mark an institution’s history – that happens once in a lifetime. And that someone did not suspect that she would stand here and address you tonight. After many traditions have been broken, I am about to break one more: Luiza, you are the exception to the exception. Please step forward; I’ve been dying to listen to your speech.

Natália Levy

Class of 2014 - Valedictorian speech

The truth is that I could not imagine graduating and leaving everyone behind without sharing what I feel, even though I’m sure that you already know. The truth is that you are so much more than my friends and this is so much more than a simple class. The truth is that, for me, Class of 2014 has always been equivalent to family.

We form quite the unusual bunch, it’s true, but I wouldn’t change any of you for the world. Each and every one has a characteristic that defines who you are and makes you so dear to me. Ana: unparalleled beauty, both inside and out. Crespo: incredible strength and power of will. Levy: a singularly vibrant and inspiring view of the world. Bella: great passion for those you love (horses included, of course). Pri: astounding creativity and ability to lead. Ale: determination to accomplish your goals and chase your dreams. Luiz: commitment and heartening resolve. Perez: protectiveness and care for those who matter to you. Brenno: ability to lighten any situation with your (often hilariously terrible) jokes. Victor: incredible intelligence and willingness to offer help whenever and wherever needed. Laranja: care and tenderness with which you treat all around you. Joana: unique personality and outlook on life. Jéssica: an unshakable conviction in your beliefs and incomparable dedication. Carly: unwavering determination and a gentle spirit. Bel: courage and the biggest heart. : unfailing kindness. Chivalry isn’t dead after all. Pia: carefree spirit and loyalty to those you love. Sara: undeniable worldliness and absolutely stunning personality. Alice: gracious posture and purity of heart. Paolo: carefree attitude and ability to live in the moment. And of course, I couldn’t forget BJ: your friendship is so important to all of us, never doubt that.

Different we may be, but we managed to join together to accomplish a common goal: to prove that we could become better individuals as we reinvented ourselves daily, by leaping over the obstacles left in our way and setting new challenges after previous ones were overcome. I am not sure when we decided to do so, but we eventually became a united front: nothing could shake our principles or determination, and, most importantly, nothing could tear us apart. We will always remain a united front, of that I am certain.

It’s somewhat absurd to think about, but I doubt that many of us would have become friends in other circumstances just because we are so, so different. This just goes to show how unique this class really is because, differences or no, I cannot think of any other group of people that I would have rather had by my side everyday. Every single one of you is brilliant in countless ways, but all are equal in one aspect: the purity and goodness of your hearts.

Your hearts were always steadfast and filled with the will to go on no matter what. They were set on their ways, but did not fear change; no, we understood that change was the catalyst for development, and embraced it as best we could. Your hearts were filled with the desire to remain undivided, always. They were hearts of gold.

And I will be forever thankful for your open arms, welcoming smiles, and the luck that brought me here. Class of 2014, I love you right now more than I did yesterday, and less than I will tomorrow. After all, distance makes the heart grow fonder, doesn’t it?

We have reached the extreme together; it is now time to go beyond it in our separate ways. Keep looking up at the sky and searching for the stars amidst the darkness. When you find them, and you will, reach for them once more. And never fear loneliness, for our memory will remain with you in every step of your new journey. You won’t be alone.

Class of 2014, you are incredible and you are memorable; never settle for anything less than that. You have won my heart. Make me proud; I know you will.
