HEARING OUR VOICES

The school year of 2012-2013 was a great year for the Middle School English Program. Students were introduced to various reading strategies and started a Writing Workshop based on the notorious Teacher´s College at Columbia University model. Slowly, they begin to understand who they were as readers, and hear their own voices as writers as they blossomed into very unique young authors. Here are some samples of their work, chosen at random, but that fully illustrate how far they’ve come. It was a great pleasure and honor to have worked with these young brilliant minds! I wish them the best of luck in the years to come.

Oscar Niemeyer

Did you ever wonder about a world made from curves? Well, Oscar Niemeyer did. Oscar Niemeyer was the best architect in the world. And that is because his buildings are full of curves and imagination.
Oscar Niemeyer lived to be 104. He died on December 5th, of 2012. He was born in 15 of December, 1907. In 1928 he married Anita Baldo. From his marriage, he had a daughter called Anna Maria. A year later he joined the “Escola Municipal de Belas Artes”.

In 1960, he finished the project city: Brasília. Oscar`s most admired works are there. The “Catedral Metropolitana de Brasília” is one of his most daring projects. He made its structure out of curved metal pillars. No one had ever tried to do a thing like that before. Every citizen of Brasília admires his work greatly.

If I were to compare a famous American to Oscar Niemeyer, I would definitely choose Adrian D. Smith. Adrian, just like Oscar, is one of the most respected and admired names in architecture. He is famous for his work in Dubai. He was the one who made the Burj Khalifa! Both have great works and a common fan; me.

In my opinion, Oscar Niemeyer was greatest architect in the world. No other person has dared to do what he did. I inspire myself in his work when I try to draw something. In that way, my drawings become stupendously awesome. He was really the “chosen one” in terms of innovative projects. Architecture was another thing in which he was chosen by God.

Oscar Niemeyer was the greatest architect in the world. I think of that as the truth because his projects had astonishing ideas. The curves on his projects made the buildings come alive. Even in school, his teachers loved his work. Well, to make a long story short: Oscar Niemeyer was the best architect who ever stepped on Earth.

Mané Garrincha

Garrincha won two consecutive World Cups. He also won a lot of individual titles. He won six individual titles in 1962 such as World Cup Top Scorer and World Cup Player of the Tournament. He also entered the Brazilian Football Museum Hall of Fame. He invented a trick in which he stopped the ball and moved to all directions without the ball confusing the defender.

There are few American soccer players that can be compared to Garrincha. Donovan is one of the best
American soccer players. Garrincha and Donovan are both soccer idols. Garrincha has two World Cups while Donovan doesn’t have any. They were top scorers of their leagues.

For me, Garrincha is an example of an athlete. He never gave up on his dream of being a soccer player.
People said that he couldn’t play soccer due to his legs, but that didn’t stop him. He was also a very important athlete to Brazil. He promoted Brazilian Soccer throughout the world. He had several problems, but he had one that was very serious: alcohol.

Garrincha was one of the best soccer players in history. He won two World Cups. He also was chosen by FIFA to be one of the best soccer players in world. His dream was to be a soccer player and he ended up being one of the best. Even with his right leg bent inwards and his left leg shorter and bent outwards, he became one of the best soccer players in the world.

Crooked legs is a soccer genius! Garrincha was famous due to his tricks. He played for Botafogo during 12 years. He also played on other clubs, but he didn’t play as well as he played in Botafogo. He was known as “Mané Garrincha”, “Alegria do Povo” and “Anjo das Pernas Tortas”.

Manuel Francisco dos Santos, Garrincha, was born in October 28, 1933. He lived in Pau Grande with his parents and brothers. His nickname Garrincha was given by his brother when his brother saw Garrincha doing bad things with a bird called Garrincha. He had his right leg bent inwards and his left leg was six centimeters shorter and curved out. Despite this challenge, he was able to use it to trick the defenders. He was married to different women and had 14 children.

Lars Grael: an example to all

It’s really nice to know someone famous. Lars Grael is a famous Brazilian because of his lectures and because he is a great sailor. He is considered one of the best sailors in the world. His family is his wife, Renata, his son, Nicholas, his daughters, Trine and Sofia, and his dog, Loli. His daughter, Sofia, is my best friend.

He was born in São Paulo, SP, and comes from a family of sailors. His brother, Torben, is also a champion. His uncles were the first Brazilians to win a “Mundial de Iatismo”. The tradition comes from his great grandfather, Preben. Lars suffered an accident (1998), in which he lost his right leg. He gives lectures about life, values, and other topics. Lots of ONGs, schools, universities, governs, foundations and other organizations are interested in them.

He won lots of awards, including when he went to the Olympics, where he got 2 bronze medals. He was a champion many other times. For example, he won the “Campeonato Brasileiro” 21 times. He was even a five-time South American champion! He overcame his accident and is still sailing today.

Lars Grael is similar to Dennis Conner. Dennis is considered a great sailor in the USA. When he was young, he had the fortune of being mentored by many of the local yatching heroes and he always sailed in his free time. He went to the America’s Cup 6 times. He won 4 times, and lost 2. He is known to many as “Mr. America’s Cup”, due to his 30 years’ experience of America’s Cup. He was the only person in the picture of Sports Illustrated (1987) with the President of the United States.

Models Eat Big Macs

It all started with a Big Mac. Gisele Bündchen, a famous Brazilian, is considered one of the most successful supermodels in the world. Not many people know the real story behind all the cameras, catwalks, and picture frames. They would never guess everything that this woman has achieved since she was a teenager. Nobody would ever think about the possibility of a simple southern Brazilian girl becoming the most famous and well-known supermodel in the 21st century.

Gisele Bündchen was born on July 20th, 1980, in Horizontina, Rio Grande do Sul. She is one of five sisters and has a fraternal sister called Patricia. As a teenager, she wanted to become a volleyball player, and was constantly teased at in school for being tall and skinny. At the age of 14, Gisele was discovered by a modeling agent at a shopping mall in São Paulo while eating a Big Mac. She later returned to her home town, Horizontina, and began taking modeling lessons to have better posture while walking. At the age of 16, she debuted on the catwalk for New York’s Fashion Week(1996).

In 1997, she moved to NYC.In 1997, at the age of 17, Gisele was chosen by the prestigious designer, Alexander McQueen for his runaway show. In 1999, she appeared on the cover of Vogue Magazine in the months of July, November and December. She also won the award for “Model of The Year” on the VH1/Vogue Awards. On the year 2000 she was elected by Vogue, “Model of The Year”, and the “Most Beautiful Woman In The World” by Rolling Stone Magazine; in the same year, she signed a contract worth US$25 million with Victoria’s Secret. By 2004, she had become the highest-paid model in the world, according to Forbes Magazine. Around this time, she appeared in the movie “Taxi”, with Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon, and two years later she made an appearance in “The Devil Wears Prada”, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

In 2007, she ended her contract with Victoria’s Secret, but continued being ranked as the “Most Well-paid” supermodel in the world. In 2012 she posed nude for Vogue Paris, showing the world that, even with the scandals, she was still one of the sexiest models working nowadays.

One of her biggest impacts on society was that she proved to people that models can, and should, have curves and be healthy, while still being beautiful. She is considered the most successful Brazilian supermodel and with that, she ended up opening doors for many other boys and girls to pursue their dreams of engaging in the fashion world. In the fashion business, many people, like Gisele, find themselves in midst of controversy. She managed to pull through all of that, and proved that she really is a strong woman. Recently she stated another thing that surprised many

people. She said that she hates Photoshop, and prefers working with photographers that do not use of the photo filters or too much make-up, which is not common nowadays.

Gisele can be compared to the American presenter and model, Tyra Banks. She is, as well, considered one of the most successful women in the modeling business, and producer of all times. Both Gisele and Tyra have worked for famous brands and fashion designers around the world, and appeared in numerous magazines covers. Both of them were also hostesses of the American and Brazilian versions of “…Next Top Model”, a Tv Show that finds new undiscovered young models and helps them enter the fashion industry. They also stared in various Hollywood Productions.

In my opinion, one of the things that most impresses me about Gisele is that until today, even with her busy schedule, she manages to keep a strong bond with her family, specially her sisters. Her twin, Patricia, is her manager in Brazil. Gabriela is her lawyer. Raquel, does her accounting, and Rafaela works on her website/social networking. Her other sister, Graziela, is a Federal Judge in Brazil. Gisele claims that she’s a “homeboy who’s always home”, loves her mama’s food and loves having her dad playing the guitar for her. Although being a healthy model, Gisele confessed being a “chocaholic”, and that she pretty much loves anything that’s chocolate. She’s not only done things for fashion purposes, but she has also helped create institutions to help the poor and the ill throughout her whole career.

Once she said in an interview: “When I’m in front of the camera, just like an actress, I’m playing a role. One day I’m sexy, the next I’m wild, the next I’m tough. But in everyday life, I’m the tomboy girl”.

Who would have ever thought that by eating a Big Mac, something so great would happen in the life of a simple Brazilian girl? That simple detail changed her life forever, even if sooner or later she would be discovered. Gisele is a great example of a strong and powerful woman, and mother. Nowadays Gisele is married to the famous football player Tom Brady and has a son, Benjamin, and is pregnant of their second son. In the end we can all come to the conclusion that, life is really unexpected.

Kaká

Kaká, the Brazilian star! Many people, nowadays, know him as the “bench” player for Real Madrid. The Real Madrid coach, José Mourinho, does not give much playing time to the Brazilian veteran ever since he had an injury in 2010. But, what some people don’t know is that Kaká was the star player for AC Milan during its golden age. Kaká is a famous Brazilian because of his success with AC Milan and achievements with the Brazilian national soccer team. He is one of the most well-known people to ever wear the “Amarelinha” (nickname for the Brazilian jersey).

Kaká has dedicated most of his life to playing soccer. During his career,he has played for three different teams: São Paulo, AC Milan, and Real Madrid. He began his career in São Paulo in 2000. Kaká is also a very religious person, always donating earnings to charity and helping the poor. He is married, has two sons, and is originally from Distrito Federal (Brasília, Brazil). Kaká’s life revolves around soccer and hopefully he will continue on for the time to come.

Kaká is a very successful soccer player and has won many tournaments with his teams, together with the 2002 FIFA WORLD CUP. He has also won the highest individual honor for a soccer player, the Ballon’ Dor in 2007. He beat his teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, in the voting and was awarded the best soccer player in the world. He became famous through his attacking midfielder play style. Although he is a midfielder, he scores lots of goals and is very agile with the ball.

Kaká changed the world of soccer by doing what he does best, being religious and being a good team player. He shows a lot of sportsmanship when playing and increases his good image. He gave the courage to other religious players to show their faiths, and gave religion a good morale in sports. He also improves any team he plays for. These facts make Kaká a huge impact on society.

He is comparable to the American soccer player, Clint Dempsey. Both Kaká and Clint are midfielders and help their teams on offense. They both play for European teams and have been downgraded by their coaches, so they currently sit on the bench for most of the game. Both soccer players participated in the 2009 FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP and FIFA WORLD CUP 2010. In the 2009 FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP, Kaká beat Clint in the final, clinching the title for Brazil. They are both important men to the world of soccer. Kaká is and has always been one of my favorite players. I always watched him play while growing-up, and my style is inspired by him. He was a crucial player to Brazil’s success a few years back and I think he deserves recognition for winning the 2002 FIFA WORLD CUP. I like his charitable personality, and I like that, even though he is a great player, he doesn’t put himself above others. Since I’ve been an athlete my whole life, I have always been influenced by him. Kaká made a huge impact in my life, and I highly appreciate him as a person and soccer player.

Kaká is a famous Brazilian because of his success with AC Milan and the Brazilian national team. He is a very famous and appreciated soccer player all over the world. He won many team and individual titles along his career. Most importantly, he changed the world of soccer. Kaká is and will always be the idol of young and aspiring soccer players.
