Ms. Caitlin Casavecchia

[Editor´s note] On the 2nd Semester of the 2011/2012 Academic Year, Ms. Caitlin Casavecchia came to OLM as a student teacher. At that time, she was interviewed by OLMatters and told us:

“Hello! My name is Caitlin Casavecchia and I'm one of the new

student teachers here at OLM. I am a senior at Ashland University, located in Ashland, Ohio, where I am studying Early Childhood Education as well as Spanish. While at OLM I will be teaching first grade with Ms. Souza.

I'm very excited for the opportunity, as well as a little bit nervous! I want to begin learning Portuguese right away, just so that I can interact with the students more. In my spare time I like to hang out with my brother and sister, make lots of crafts, take pictures, hang out with my friends, and spend as much time as I can at the beach. I'm excited to begin my journey here at OLM and cannot wait to get to know more of you!”

Now, two years later, she’s back as a fourth grade teacher.

What have you been doing for the past two years?

For the last two years I’ve been teaching English to 1st and 2nd grades in a bilingual school in Honduras.

What do you think of Brazil so far?

So far Brazil has been great. When I left home it was about 8o C so I’m really happy to be here in a warm weather with the beaches. It’s a nice change.

Which places have you visited in Brazil?

I haven’t been able to visit many places in Brazil. I have been to a lot of beaches, but I haven’t really left the city very much.

What was your motivation to come back to OLM?

In the university, I have studied early Childhood Education with Spanish. A lot of the focus of that program was working with kids who speak English as their second language. And so, I was really happy when I started my student teaching in OLM and was able to work with kids who are learning English. I just loved it and decided to return.

Did you work as a professional teacher in the U.S.?

I have worked as a student teacher in the US, but I haven’t actually been a professional teacher with my own classroom.

What do you consider to be the main difference between students in Brazil and students in U.S.?

That’s a good question. Student in Brazil have more freedom to express themselves; to be individuals. There’s a lot more creativity and talking, whereas in the States it’s more rigid. They want everybody sitting, everybody doing exactly what they are told. At first I preferred the American way because that’s what I always knew, but as I worked here I realized I liked the freedom and creativity.

What profession would you have if you weren’t a teacher?

I think, if I would have any profession or talent in the world, I would be a travel photographer just to travel around and experience the world.

Is there anything you would like to remark?

It’s been great and I’m really happy to be here, back in Brazil!
