[Editor´s note] Maria Clara asked Julia to bring a picture to include in her bio-paragraph. She brought a very nice photo that shows a different place, which made us more curious about it. Her father kindly sent us a message saying...

´This Picture was taken for the occasion of Chinese New Year in a “Hawker Center”, very popular kind of food court in Singapore.

The dragon in the picture is the main character of the traditional Dragon Dance, a Chinese dance usually performed during the Chinese New Year to bring in good luck and prosperity. The dragons used in these dances are usually made up of sections of bamboo frames draped with silk. Performers are martial artists or acrobats who move their bodies rhythmically and synchronise their steps so that the dragon appears to move gracefully.

The dance had its beginnings in China and was popularized in the Tang dynasty. The dragon is regarded as a symbol of power and royalty by the Chinese and the dragon dance evolved from this association.

Julia has lived in Singapore for 5 years, during which time she was introduced to the Chinese culture and even learned to enjoy the spice Asian food and eat using chopsticks.´

Student Teachers - 1st Semester 2014_2015

Hello! My name is Caitlin Ramirez and I will be student teaching in First Grade A until December 10th.  I am from Pennsylvania and grew up in a small town called Shrewsbury. The closest city I live to is Baltimore, Maryland because my town is a mile away from the Maryland/Pennsylvania border.

I come from a large Irish Catholic family with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents with whom I am close to. In college, I was involved with theatre, dance, singing, church choir, Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and community service programs. I currently am a senior at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am double majoring in Elementary and Special Education and  American Studies. In my teaching program, I worked with a reading specialist my sophomore year and taught a Kindergarten girl with no verbal skills, how to read and speak by the end of the year. My junior year I worked in a third grade classroom and taught science to many kids who had emotional and academic difficulties. I also taught math in a fifth grade classroom at a special needs school. In the states, I have worked for four years at a learning center making lessons and camps for school age children grades 1-6.  I have worked with children in many different settings and I have loved every minute of it!

I am teaching here in beautiful Rio de Janeiro to help the first graders grow confident in their English speaking skills. In my free time I enjoy listening to all different types of music, reading, singing, and going on adventures. I will be graduating in May and be entering the teaching world in the states or travelling more in a job related to teaching ESL students.

Feel free to talk to me anytime!

Hello! My name is Katie Mishon and I am a senior at LaSalle University located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, which may sound familiar to you because of Sesame Place! I am extremely lucky to have the opportunity to teach in Miss Abreu’s 4th grade classroom at Our Lady of Mercy. I major in Elementary and Special Education with a minor in American Studies and I am in the Education Association and the American Studies Society at LaSalle University. I am also a part of REACHE, which is a program that assists developmentally delayed individuals.

In my free time I enjoy Vinyasa yoga and baking!

I look at this opportunity at Our Lady of Mercy as not only a teaching experience, but also a learning experience. These students have already shown me so much admiration and I am grateful to have such amazing students. The staff here makes me feel right at home, since the day I arrived they have been so welcoming and friendly. This is the greatest growing experience I have ever come across, living in another country for an entire semester!

Hello there! I am Mrs. Carolina Sollero. I am from São Paulo and I have lived in England, São Paulo, Campinas and Rio de Janeiro. Their curiosity, their desire to learn and inquire about life; when I see them acquiring new skills, it makes my day! I have studied Pedagogy at Unicamp and attended to educational courses in PUC-RJ. During my years of teaching I had the opportunity to return to UK to observe schools and study. There I concluded a post-graduation course on Differentiation  in the classroom and on Speaking and Listening for bilingual children at the Bishop Grossetest University of Lincoln.
